Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that offers financial support to those in the construction trade who are living with life-altering injuries. Every year the Foundation honors numerous recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was thrilled to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, raised in Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil suffered a severe stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the use of his left arm and it left his left leg severely impaired, resulting in foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors worried that he would most likely become confined to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their lone source of income, putting financial tension on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. They became optimistic when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a device that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help a person in Adil’s situation walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they could not afford the apparatus in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be needed so he could learn how to use it.

Thankfully, a professional at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the wonderful grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
