What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Livermore always writes about how our service techs are NATE-certified, and while it sounds reassuring, what does it really mean?

NATE stands for North American Technician Excellence and, as stated on their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization is owned, operated, developed, and supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not all people in the industry are required to be certified by NATE. The certification is discretionary and technicians can provide heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration services without being certified through NATE.

It’s important to Service Experts that our team is NATE-certified to make sure we are sending the most qualified and professional technicians into your home. To make sure technicians meet these criteria, the NATE-certification tests validate real-world working knowledge of HVACR systems for technicians. The tests are knowledge-based tests that assess the technician’s knowledge of these criteria.

Since Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification and not refrigeration, there are only certain areas pertinent to our technicians. NATE assessment candidates may earn installation and/or service certification in one or more of the skill areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating
  • Oil Heating
  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (service only)
  • Light Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Ground Source Heat Pump Loop Installer
  • Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst
