What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Livermore always writes about how our service techs are NATE-certified, and while it sounds reassuring, what does it actually mean?

NATE is the acronym for North American Technician Excellence and, as stated on their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization is owned, operated, developed, and supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not all people in the industry are required to be NATE-certified. The certification is discretionary and technicians can provide heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration services without being certified through NATE.

It’s important to Service Experts that our technicians are NATE-certified to be sure we are sending the most qualified and professional technicians into your home. To make sure professionals meet these criteria, the NATE-certification exams validate real-world working knowledge of HVACR systems for technicians. The tests are knowledge-based exams that assess the technician’s knowledge of these subjects.

Since Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification instead of refrigeration, there are only specific areas pertinent to our technicians. NATE assessment candidates may receive installation and/or service certification in one or more of the skill areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating
  • Oil Heating
  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (service only)
  • Light Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Ground Source Heat Pump Loop Installer
  • Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst
